The leader of several prize-winning jazz bands, Lubos Soukup, pairs his awe-inspiring technique and boundless sense of musical adventures with a stubborn desire to make music that moves people. His music speaks directly to the audience. Uniting his compositions is the fact that they’re all well-composed themes and colorful improvised soundscapes. This creates a deep listening experience, and evoking beautiful imagery and emotional responses in the listener.
Short bio
Lubos Soukup is a freelance musician, composer, and educator active on both the Czech and Danish music scenes. His main instruments are the tenor and soprano saxophones, as well as the clarinet. He regularly tours throughout Europe and has performed at numerous international jazz festivals.
He leads several ambitious projects, including the Lubos Soukup Quartet (modern jazz), the Copenhagen-based Machina Mundi, and the duo Levitas (with Christian Pabst). Among his past projects are the internationally acclaimed Points Quartet (modern jazz) and its expanded formations: Points-Rataj Quintet (a fusion of contemporary jazz and live electronics) and Points Septet (experimental jazz), the dynamic Scandinavian band MAdHAs (avant-garde free bop), and the Czech-Polish quintet Inner Spaces. He has also been a part of the creative big band Concept Art Orchestra. Currently, he is a member of Freetown Quartet, Concept Art Orchestra, and Lukáš Oravec Orchestra. Soukup teaches saxophone and ensemble performance at the Jazz Department of the Academy of Performing Arts (HAMU) in Prague, Czech Republic.
Lubos Soukup has been surrounded by music since childhood and had a strong desire to become a musician from an early age. After high school, he studied at three European conservatories: the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague, the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, and the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Each school contributed to shaping his musical knowledge and helped him develop his current artistic approach. They also inspired him to continually explore new sounds and musical possibilities.
In 2017, he received the prestigious “Talent of the Year” award from the Danish Musicians Union (DMF). The nomination came from and the prize was personally presented to him by longtime Miles Davis collaborator Marilyn Mazur.
Soukup has released over ten albums featuring his original music. His work has been featured on two albums that received the Czech Grammy Award for Best Jazz Album: Light Year by Inner Spaces (2012) and The Prague Six by Concept Art Orchestra (2015). In 2013, he released Through the Mirror, an album recorded with a 14-piece ensemble that garnered immediate attention from Czech music critics.
In 2023, he released Země (The Earth), a jazz album that features guest guitarist Lionel Loueke, adding a subtle African touch to the sound. Soukup’s most ambitious project and composition to date is Scandinavian Impressions (2024), a suite for symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble featuring the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and Concept Art Orchestra, conducted by French maestro Bastien Stil.
